Radical New Understanding of Cancer
For decades, researcher Mina Bissell pursued a revolutionary idea -- that a cancer cell doesn't automatically become a tumor, but rather, depends on surrounding cells (its microenvironment) for cues on how to develop. She shares the two key experiments that proved the prevailing wisdom about cancer growth was wrong.
Mina Bissell’s groundbreaking research has proven that cancer is not only caused by cancer cells. It is caused by an interaction between cancer cells and the surrounding cellular micro-environment. In healthy bodies, normal tissue homeostasis and architecture inhibit the progression of cancers. But changes in the microenvironment can shift the balance. This explains why many people harbor potentially malignant tumors in their bodies without knowing it and never develop cancer, and why tumors often develop when tissue is damaged or when the immune system is suppressed.
Bissell's work also reaffirms the growing body of science on epigenetics which shows that the expression of genes is determined by the microenvironment of the body. Furthermore, good genes can be switched-on and bad genes can be switched-off merely by our body's microenvironment. These studies take DNA sequencing to the next level of understanding.
However, the key point of Mina Bissell's work and presentation is that cancer cells don't automatically become a tumor unless the surrounding cells (its microenvironment) are compromised - as in a suppressed immune system. We all have cancer cells in our bodies but a healthy robust immune system will keep them at bay. So cancer is merely a symptom of a suppressed immune system. In other words, if you have a healthy properly functioning immune system, you will not ‘develop’ cancer.
This simple logic still seems to ‘escape’ the medical establishment because it seems too simplistic and, more importantly, because acknowledgement of it would then turn focus to the nutrients required for healthy immune function - that being lifestyle factors (in particular diet, exercise and environment). And if cancer can be prevented, treated and cured by maintaining or developing a healthy immune system not only will the cancer industry become obsolete, the entire medical complex would be under threat.
