RIO is buying Ivanhoe Mines Ltd(IVN) shares which is listed on the NYSE and TSE. Ivanhoe Mines Australia Ltd (IVA) is a separate compan ylisted on the ASX, BUT it is 60% owned by IVN. So RIO isn't buying IVA shares directly. IVA's assets are all in Australia (Copper, Gold, Molybdenium and Rhenium). IVN's most famous asset is its 66% share of the massive Oyu Tolgoi Copper/Gold mine in Mongolia. Rio now ons 48.5% of IVN, which means it indirectly owns about a third of Oyu Tolgoi, the remainibg third owned by the Mongolians. Hope that helps.
