Samsung's My BP Lab study is a research app designed to help study participants track their blood pressure and stress levels using new sensor technologies on the Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones.

 

The BP tech is currently being beta tested. An announcement is expected in mid-March. 

 

Apart from Samsung there are two main players trying to get the BP tech to market - Sage Bionetworks, Seattle and UCSF/University of California San Francisco.

 

They’ve been working on the project for well over 12 months.

 

The “My BP Lab” research app leverages an optical sensor embedded in the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphone to provide estimations of heart rate and BP. 

 

Participants can track variation in their BP and stress levels relative to their daily experiences over the course of the three week study.

 

“This study potentially will provide the largest dataset ever obtained on stress levels, health behaviors and physiological responses during the course of one’s daily life,” says Wendy Berry Mendes, UCSF Professor and Principal Investigator of the My BP Lab study. 

 

“By collecting subjective experiences, behaviors like sleep and exercise, and blood pressure levels across a three week period, we can identify the most important triggers of stress physiology".
