To a certain degree they had to do that, it was a new business afterall. One big problem was there wasn't an easy quick way to identify which customers were coming and which were not and then tune the offer.

Marketing didn't really ramp up until there was a national presence. NSW was a problem getting land approvals, so nationall;y the marketing had to wait beyond where it should have. HTH (or rather Danks) was a HW wholesaler with some stores. The Danks management probably should have been more involved and the US management less.......they were a good hard nosed bunch that probably should have been listened too.
As for appealing to women.....well as much as we hate to admit it, statistics say that hardware is a mans world. Maybe the garden area should have been boosted up a bit....who knows.
But you are both correct, mgt made some mistakes and then didn't move to adjust to the market fast enough.
