Your simile is actually a reification: just because you think bank fees are high, doesn't actually mean they are. After all, we all want something for nothing. I'm sure you don't consider payment by credit card at any shop a monopoly by the CC companies. Why think about it differently in a taxi? Cash or CC, its your choice, not CAB's. The charge ceiling put on by the govt is coming to shops too, btw.
