I think you will find that the Buy and the Sell orders within a 5 to 10 cent range of the last price traded are as much Smoke and Mirrors as they are genuine orders. However, that’s not to say there are not genuine orders, its just the motives behind the positioning and volumes are somewhat open to debate.

Wouldnt it be wonderful if all Short Sells and Short Covering Buys and any order that has a degree of association with another sell or buy order were colour coordinated and carried reference # IDs so that the genuine investor could have the same level playing field as those that scam and manipulate the price.
