FYI all,
I just read the US Patent 10003020 of 4 DS and try to find some info about their cell capacity.
Well, there is NONE info. So far, all I can see the info about standard 1 - 4 bits per 25-40nm cell in conventional memory tech.
Quote in the Patent : "... is an illustration of a memory device 10 which includes a Platinum (Pt) bottom electrode 16, which in turn is coupled to a Praseodymium Calcium Manganese Oxide (PCMO) layer 14 which in turn is coupled to a top electrode 12 which is made of a metal. If a Gibbs free energy for the formation of oxidation of the top electrode 12 is less (more negative) than a Gibbs free energy for the formation of oxidation of the PCMO layer 14, the top electrode metal 12 will spontaneously form a thin metal oxide 18 at the interface as shown in FIG. 1b. The first metal oxide layer is preferably thinner than the second oxide layer. In an embodiment, the second metal oxide layer (in this case PCMO) is twenty to fifty times thicker than the first metal oxide layer. For example, the thickness of the first metal oxide layer is in the range of ten to fifty angstroms, and the thickness of the PCMO is 500 to 1000 angstroms.
Importantly, the construction of the cell is bloody fancy with thick layer of Platinum (white gold) = expensive. The thickness of the PCMO is ranging from 500 - 1000 angstroms = 50 - 100 nm which means no way 4DS cell can achieve 40 nm working cell like WBT do. On top of that, did I mention about 1 Mb capacity of WBT whereas 4DS is Nil.
Now, If we put the WBT cell on a dinner plate 300 mm like 4DS do, we can achieve roughly ...I may show you some calculations here,
300mm = 300,000,000 nm
so that 1 plate can fit about 7mil - 7.5 mil WBT cells which make the plate can store about 7mil - 7.5mil Mb. And we know that 8 bits = 1 bytes, therefore we will have a dinner plate with at least 0.8 TB (tetrabytes) or about 800 Gbs for your blue-ray/ bad boy movies.
If we stack about 25 000 of the plates together (which make the plate thickness about 1 mm), well, we will have enough data (20000 TBs) to run a online movie website with the plate already.
Ok, If WBT can achieve the 28nm milestone, well, .... we can have a smart watch (1 - 2 inches) that can have at least 1 - 2 TBs on it, oh man, too much for a watch. I am thinking about making a Smart contact lenses like Crossbar is going to develop.
In summary, I think WBT will have more potential and the management team hasn't misled any info at all. Waiting for the next 5c options to be exercised and then 50mil at 6.25c and see the story from there.
