"ARISTOCRAT Leisure has increased plans to enter the video lottery market with the $70 million buy of Scandinavian gaming technology provider EssNet Interactive.
The deal includes an agreement with Tattersall's, which will give up its 25 per cent stake in EssNet but keep its strategic options open via an alliance with Aristocrat.
The poker machine maker yesterday said the deal would allow it to exploit the growing world market for server-based video lotteries.
"This is a key opportunity for us to enter a segment of the global gaming market in which we do not currently compete," Aristocrat chief executive Paul Oneile said.
He said the company expected demand for video lotteries to increase, especially in Europe and Asia.
The EssNet technology allows third-party developers to create games for its service. It operates the games over a network from a central server, rather than from the gaming machine.
Shaw Stockbroking gaming analyst Greg Fraser said the software could eventually allow Aristocrat to download new poker machine games from head office rather than putting them into each machine.
"It's still a long way to go before all games become downloadable," Mr Fraser said.
"But that's the direction the market is heading in."
