Sure, the only way you would not be aware of competition in retail energy markets is of you had been living on Mars for the past decade.
So your post addresses one part of the investment thesis.
The other part - and by far the most important part, when it comes to making money or otherwise, from an investment in AGL today - is whether all this sturm und drang has been priced into the stock?
And, the corollary to that is: If you think the competitive intensity hasn't been priced into the stock, then why hasn't it, given it is very visible and observable?
