This is a great approach. He has a lot of relevant experience to be in a sales / account management role.
I'm in a sales role at the moment myself, but have 8 year experience in what I'm talking about, people trust me a lot more than they do our generic sales staff who have only ever done sales. His experience in the industry will give him a 'trusted advisor' reputation and sales will start to grow off the back of that.
