GM opposition exists because the issue has been made a political one. There is no science to dispell the safety of GM food and even if there was we could simply divert GM produce to the biofuel sector. Apparently cars can't grow a fifth tire. 400 million yanks have been eating the stuff for over 10 years and probably on a mealy basis and I guarantee everyone in this country has at one stage or another consumed a transgenically altered foodstuff.
Why the pressure now? Well probably because the think tanks behind national interest planning are starting to worry about the level of global food stocks and the potential for massive food inflation. The last time food stocks were this low was in the early 1970s when we had around half the global population of today and certainly very few cars using grain for fuel. In the US alone in 2006, 60 million tonnes of corn were converted into ethanol. That is three Australia grain crops of around 20 million tonnes!
GM is the last big leap we have left to ramp up food production. If you are against GM you are effectively promoting that in 3rd world nations in particular they are 'better off dead than fed'.
I've yet to meet an environmentalist who will volunteer to give up their daily food ration for another. And if the world turned its agricultural systems 100% organic, we could only support around 2 billion people and that is being optimistic. So whose going to volunteer out of 6.5 billion people to go without. Goodbye global security!
The state of government intervention and general political mismangement in agricultural policy will come back to bite us all in the hip pocket. The days of cheap food are fast disappearing. One production hiccup anywhere in the world this year and futures markets will skyrocket! We are at a very unfamiliar point for two generations in history. There will be a lot more people involved in agriculture in the future and I believe most of the big growth opportunities for business lie in this field too.
