“Rio Tinto will spend hundreds of millions of dollars over decades rehabilitating Argyle diamond mine in the Kimberley after its expected closure in 2020.
Speaking to WestBusiness after the launch of the company’s 2018 Argyle diamond tender in Sydney yesterday, chief executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques confirmed there was no economic case for continuing operations at the mine beyond 2020.
Mr Jacques said Rio was undertaking a feasibility study into the mine closure and site rehabilitation and was engaging with traditional owners, the local community, its workers and the State Government.
“We are committed to doing the right thing at Argyle,” he said.
Mr Jacques said some of Argyle’s 450 workers might be involved in its rehabilitation while others could be redeployed to the company’s Pilbara iron ore operations.
Last month, NRW Holdings revealed it had won a $7 million contract with Rio for a trial mine rehabilitation project at Argyle.”
