My earliest of the Melbourne Cup were Sydney class rooms where excitement would start building days before.
It would be fever pitch on the Tuesday. Someone at the back would have a transistor radio. They would be swarmed during the breaks then go under their desk to listen to the actual race ( against the rules to d0 it openly ) .
It seemed like the most important thing in all the world .
