Mining forum eyes bumper crowd

“Kalgoorlie-Boulder is poised to light up for the biggest showing of its famous Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum in six years next week, with a bumper crowd of 2300 delegates expected to fly into Australia’s unofficial gold capital in a sign the industry has picked itself off the floor.

The resurgence of the mining industry, powered by an improved outlook for iron ore, gold and the emergence of battery metals such as lithium, have again made it the focal point of WA and Australia’s business and investment landscape over the past two years.

Billions of dollars of expansions in West Australian iron ore, gold, lithium and LNG are in the pipeline.”

“For the first time two mining services firms, Ausdrill and NRW Holdings, will be on the bill.

Several years ago a number of mining services firms tightening the belt in the wake of the global financial crisis and subsequent downturn declined the invitation to speak from former forum director John Langford, who sadly died just a month out from this year’s 27th showing.

Mr Ertzen said the recent success of Australia’s top listed services firms and their desire to showcase their wares at Diggers showed the engine room of the resources industry was turning again.

“If these guys are making profits there’s a lot of work and the industry is healthy,” he said.”

“The drilling, the construction companies, the earthmoving and the underground mining, it’s very strong and there’s a lot of people being employed, there’s a lot going on.”

“Mr Langford said 106 mining companies vied for the three-day forum’s allotted 48 presentation slots from August 6-8.
“There are some companies that might have expected to be presenting at Diggers and Dealers that just didn’t get a presentation slot this year,” he said.
“We can’t expand the forum past the 48 slots because it is a very busy three days.
“It is a nice problem for us to have but we have disappointed a few companies.”
