Forrestfield-Airport Link tunnel worker injured after high pressure air line ruptures

Emergency services have been called in to the Forrestfield Airport Link after a high pressure water pipe burst and injured a worker.
A WORKER on the Forrestfield-Airport Link tunnel is in a critical condition in hospital after he was knocked unconscious, suffered serious injuries and had to be rescued from 20m underground on Saturday evening.

The man was struck in the head by a bracket torn from the wall during routine maintenance on a pipe and was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he was listed in a critical condition.

Fire and rescue crews were called to Perth Airport around 5.32pm today when the accident occurred.



A Public Transport Authority spokesman said the 35-year-old man was working inside the cavity that will form part of the Perth Airport train station.

It is believed air pumped into a pipe at high pressure caused a bracket to rip off the wall, striking the man in the head.

He was wearing a hard hat but fell to the ground and lost consciousness.

He was stabilised on the scene by St John Ambulance paramedics before being lifted out of the tunnel in a basket attached to a crane and transported to Royal Perth Hospital under priority with serious injuries to his face and body.

The $1.86 billion rail line will link new stations at Forrestfield, Perth Airport and Redcliffe with Bayswater.
