Both parties (the EU, and the exiting nation, the UK) have it in their interests not to just destroy the membership without some form of alternative arrangement in place.
It's highly unlikely that on the 24th of June, the UK will simply pull out of the EU and everything switches over to treating them as a 'third country'...

"If a vote for Brexit does occur, the UK would invoke article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty beginning a two-year negotiation period on the terms of leaving."
