Presently gold is selling below its industrial use price (which parallels palladium).  Last I checked, the connections from the wafers in all major ICs to the pins are made of mostly gold.  Often the pins and connectors are also plated with gold.  Gold, palladium, and to a lessor extent platinum, are essential components of modern integrated electronics.  If economies recover and more electronics is used then gold will become more valuable, if economies collapse and people seek a reliable store of value then gold will become more valuable.  Think of gold as a "butterfly spread" bet.
