Agreed , Interlocks are good , and they can stop all manner of accidents from happening .
However , who will pay for this level of safety .
The interlocks are not a legislated requirement by any authority including OHS , therefore operators are not encumbered to fit them to their trucks . Operators may be comfortable with their insurance to cover occasional accidents in their operations.
Lets face it , operators want to reduce their brake expense and is the only reason to fit SIBS ,and at the lowest cost to operators. At the moment the marginal benefits of Sibs for garbage truck are not justified by their cost .
Councils do want to provide cleaner services to residents , but they also have to justify their costs.Dust emisssions is gaining traction albeit slow. Noise pollution ,well, I can't even remember someone complaining about that issue.
Pressure from the general population to change Council policies re enviromental issues seem long way off.
Removing the interlocks from Sibs may not be the answer, but something needs to be done to increase sales , the best way is to reduce price without reducing margins , who knows but it may be that the cost of the interlocks may reduce overall margin (profit)as well as increase price.
In the end its a enviromental issue not a cost saving decision for councils and then the Public Purse pays.
