Shorting the index is something that most pro traders infrequently or never do. The long-term uptrend of equity markets negates the short-term gains. From my experience with shorting the XJO via BBOZ, or S&P 500 via BBUS, any open profit doesn't last long. The buy and sell timing needs to be fairly precise in order to short the market.
BBUS down to $4.60 today. Short-term trend still down.
Unless we get another GFC type event, shorting the equity indices is not worthwhile. See weekly chart below of BBUS with 10 period EMA line. The price extends from the left top corner down to the right bottom corner. The trend is DOWN!
