Origin Energy to lift battery exposure
Origin Energy has outlined ambitions to boost its exposure to the fast-growing battery market this year by working with large industrial customers who are looking to tap large-scale storage systems to manage their power needs.
Up to 450,000 energy storage systems could be in place throughout Australia by 2020 under a high-growth scenario forecast by the Smart Energy Council, with a switch to renewable power backed up by storage shifting the nation to a rapidly decentralised power network.
The Sydney-based company is also considering grid scale batteries at its Mortlake gas-fired power plant in Victoria and at Australia’s largest power station, the giant Eraring coal-fired facility in NSW.
Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates about 90 per cent of the $88bn forecast to be spent adding power capacity in Australia until 2040 will be outlaid on clean energy.
