Firstly, Olympus problems were with endoscopes intended for the GI tract, they had no relationship with Zeiss or Optiscan. However the issue of potential for contamination and transmission of microbes is a general one. I don't know if Zeiss is responsible for the sheath development, but I do recall that it was the cause of delays in the development, maybe a year or more, which is an indication of its importance. Who would get revenues for the disposable sheaths I couldn't say, but the user will pay.
