"take every liberty you can" - one thing I learnt early in life, since my father was apart-time tax agent (did tax returns for clients) was that the Tax Department could be quite obtuse when it came to interpreting the words "expenditure necessarily incurred in the gaining of income". In this context I heard him on at least one occasion saying he would take a matter all the way to the Privy Council if necessary.
