Assume self-driving cars are a hacker's dream? Think again

After all, a normal car has a driver with their hands on the wheel and feet on the pedals. Common sense suggests this provides a modicum of protection against a car takeover which a self-driving car, or even one with just the sort of assisted driving features already found on the road today, lacks.

But that’s the wrong way round, says Craig Smith, a security researcher and car hacker. “One interesting thing about fully self-driving cars is they’re unintentionally more secure, which is really not what you would expect at all.”

Researchers tackle autonomous vehicle security

Texas A&M University researchers have developed an intelligent transportation system prototype designed to avoid collisions and prevent hacking of autonomous vehicles.

"Sensors are like GPS navigation in the network that gather information about the environment," said Satchidanandan. "Actuators such as motors, or controls such as the steering wheel, interact with them. If the sensors are corrupted or hijacked by malicious agents through the internet, they can provide false information on vehicle locations resulting in collisions."

To fix this, Kumar and his team added a random private signal called a 'watermark' to the actuators. The presence of this watermark and its statistical properties were known to every node in the system, but its actual random values were not revealed. When the measurements reported by the sensors did not have the right properties of this watermark, the actuators assumed that the sensors or their measurements had been tampered with somewhere along the line. With this new information, the researchers could predict a collision.

The researchers showed that their technology could work in the lab. The actuators in the autonomous vehicles halted themselves when the sensors were tampered with.

One strategy Bezzo uses to counter these stealth attacks is building redundancy into systems, where multiple sensors monitor the operation of the system, and subtle variations in one sensor can indicate an intrusion on another.

“By using these redundancies, you can understand if something is compromised or not,” he said. “If you want a comparison of the information from your sensors with the others in your system, you can see if something is compromised or not.”

The more redundancies there are in a system, the harder it is to break in and the more likely the operator can detect something is wrong.
