Having been a serious grain/beef/wool farmer in another life, I do have a feel for the tremendous risks continually faced by all farmers, over which they have very little control. Weather, costs of capital, inexorably rising running costs of fuel, chemicals, fertilisers, insurance and all other inputs - always far above product price rises - overall means that most farmers are desperately trying to maintain a rural lifestyle rather than achieving a reasonable return on their capital investment. But the electorate as a whole doesn't care about fair prices for farm production (does anyone really believe that retailing milk cheaper than processed water can allow a fair return to farmers who have to operate 14hours x 7days/week?). So I sold up to a property developer who broke my productive farm into 50 completely food-unproductive lifestyle blocks for tree-changers to enjoy.... But LT the world still needs food, so I support investment in fertilisers.
