I think doing business in China, Africa, South America, India, Pakistan is the quickest way to go broke. As Australian companies we have a legal obligation to operate in compliance with the corporations act. To do business in these countries you need to set up dodgy companies to pay bribes and generally break Australian law. If your not going to break the law you are basically wasting your time.
The exception to this is if you have some tie to the country like your wealthy family or someone powerful has a vested interest in your company. You can pretty much generalise and state any Australian company successfully operating in a second or third world country is breaking the law and you would be right most of the time.
I have been dealing with the above nationalities in the mining industry and in my experience they just don't pay their bills. Roy Hill is a massive black hole for contractors same as Cape Preston. The contractors are stuffed at Roy Hill because they agreed to take any legal action in Hong Kong when they signed their contracts. Cape lambert is still in court owing contractors money. All the projects Ive worked on that involve a foreign interest just don't pay their bills. It used to be just Leighton's that didn't pay. And the saving face thing is a disaster, we constantly get ridiculous engineering designs from these guys and you cant approach them and discuss practical design change. Australian Engineering profession is totally incompetent at managing mining business' and the guys from the above mentioned countries take it to another level.
I would agree that parts of Europe would most likely be best. Preferably places that Putting doesn't have an eye on.
