kicks i don't believe it was a highly political decision although very little is known about each design.But if the selection process is similar to the army phase 2 and 3 land 400 contracts then imo picking the best design is a priority and if that conflicts with the manufacturer so b it.I would prefer the best of both parts of tender and austal has been building serious vessels in the US,philippines and australia with many years of global and export potential.
The only question i have heard raised is austal makes aluminum vessels while these opv's being steel and requiring a level ? of Q&T steel,but clearly there has been and still is a serious skills program to skill up Q&T welding so my gut feel its a good decision and imo more chance of these vessels being exported due to austals experience compared to asc.imo.
