SINGAPORE - President Aquino is against banning large scale mining, saying it would be easier to regulate large scale miners as opposed to controlling small scale miners.
But Aquino said mining would only be allowed with the concurrence of the respective communities and that mining would be stopped "if damage is already done."
"I am almost totally convinced [na] hindi natin pwede i-ban yung mining lalo na yung large scale. If the resources are there and if they are accessible to small scale miners, yung small scale, kanya-kanya, mahirap iregulate, hirap hanapin, lalo nating hindi ma-po-proteksyunan ang environment," Aquino told reporters.
He added: "Pag large scale, more or less may manangot pag may devastation on the environment. Meron silang kakayahan to execute bonds in favor of the government to pay for the clean up, amongst other things.So we will do mining only with the concurrence of the communities that will be hosting them. If there is damage already done, then we will stop it also like what happened in Romblon."
