If you were, say, the Head of Oncology at an international US pharma and you initiate discussions with a company that was set up by; the guy who you studied your PhD under, former Head of department when you did your medical residency, VC who funded your own startup, or were in your MBA class..or any one of a number of connections that these people will share over a career...then its highly likely you will get immediate access to business opportunities/the inside track on data/first option on a deal etc etc.

These kinds of relationships are the basis of trust which underpins all commercial transactions and lead to mutually beneficial outcomes.

When your business in located on the buttcrack of the universe and you have to get used to being mistaken for being Austrian, its less likely that you will have these kinds of relationships and therefore will be behind the curve in building value into any commercial transaction.

This is the aussie discount. It sucks, but its real.
