I see your point, but I disagree. Most people have terrible hygiene. Think about it - it's 2018, and I still see folks leave public restrooms without washing their hands on a disturbingly regular basis. This is single handedly (pardon the pun) the greatest vector for the spread of disease in Western Civilization. The person who takes a crap and doesn't wash their hands then goes and prepares your lunch, and you end up with diarrhea.

Sure, it's worse in a hospital where patients are immunocompromised, but at least hospital get regularly cleaned and disinfected. When was the last time the hand rails in buses and trains got a good cleaning? Probably never.
