    I think a good point is, there's already hydro carbons down there. They've not spread as water surrounding (If any) would already be polluted. (Like those taps on gas land) (though maybe they did have some extra effect on that partIcular water supply if fracking too close. Think how powerful bunker buster explosives have to be to penetrate rock and they really dont go that deep.

    Once the frac stimulation has been initiated it only cracks the Intended rocks only so far. (thus not fracking right next to a dam and having a fair safe radius) The pressure under ground is Immense so It enables good dIrect control of the frack.

    Dewatering of the well and hopefully following that and or with that comes the gas. Just like (Strike Energy Cooper BasIn Jaws)
