I don't disagree with your comments, but I do believe these types of avenues for research need to be explored early. This is the type of headstart wbt needs to outwit its competitors in the long term.
I imagine there would be access to extra R&D funding by taking this path that may not have been available previously, perhaps the line about pursuing this in a "cash neutral way" was hinting something to that effect.
