Yield must also be sufficient to allow some of these chips off to Unis as well, since you wouldnt send off to uni level R&D if you had potential NAND Flash replacement partners waiting. Note the agreement on the extension of Leti stated:

So, if 28nm wafers start to come by the end of year, those same partners may be receiving 28nm chips as early as February. Given their traction, could be sooner.

28nm is more performant with less energy use. Leti have presented previously to show that at smaller sizes than 28nm, the chips get more expensive per unit, not less. This is because with memory you have to jump through some hoops and that makes optimisation harder the smaller you go. The ratio of wasted space also increases to avoid some technical issues. So 28nm is the current sweet spot.

Going to be an interesting 3 to 6 months. I think first wafers at 28nm will force a deal.

Just wondering about your current thoughts on the state of 28nm wafers jsbuser? Recent testing seems to indicate positive results so far, just wondering how this might affect timelines going forward? Should we be hearing more about 40nm partner applications, or is this no longer a commercial prospect?
