I haven't been following MOX too closely, but I always considered they had too many irons in the fire - chopping and changing direction.
I should imagine they had to look at consolidating their focus, and remaining cash, on fewer projects - just my thoughts.
The graphite tenement was a good fit for AXE - sandwiched between AXE's Campoona and Sugarloaf, and the newest graphite EL - Mt Messenger.
MOX could not have progressed the Waddikee project on their own
