Hi Plough, do you have the Bluetooth setting turned on for your phone? That may be your issue.

also, it's supposed to turn green when you turn it on, and blue (flashing) when it is in Bluetooth discoverable mode and blue (continuous) when the Bluetooth is connected. Purple when it's charging.

I agree that the catch on the case is harder to undo than you expect but I haven't had any other problems setting up or using the device.
