Wells in unconsolidated formations are sometimes susceptible to fines migration because of factors such as increased flow velocity, wettability alteration, and changes in water salinity. Fines migration problems typically occur in the near wellbore as a result of high drawdown pressures. Depending on the severity of the migration, productivity can decline rapidly and erosion can damage downhole hardware and surface equipment.
In formations with known fines problems, the best and most economical way to ensure a well's long-term, sustained productivity is to integrate a fines-prevention technique into the completion process.
The Schlumberger prevention solution is the FinesLOK SP fines migration control service used with the STIMPAC frac-packing service to place the fines migration treatment in the formation where the problem occurs. The fluid used with the FinesLOK SP technique leaks off into the formation and stabilizes the fines by binding them within the formation. The binding stops the fines from migrating into the proppant pack, where they could reduce conductivity and decrease production
