Yes, indeed the market regulating platform, in this case, ASX, has a responsibility in not letting the shonky directors take advantage of small investors who unwittingly fall into the traps. Unfortunately though, this is how a stock market works, passing the parcel downward and passing the profits upward. If you are the last one in the que, nothing much you can do except for claiming a tax loss.
