"others have sold for nothing" isn't that called giving them away, which is not very sensible as keeping them just in case costs no more.

"... why should those that took the gamble be rewarded" ie why should those who had faith in what Nick said about his  company and supported through thick and thin be rewarded. Well it's something the company wants to do to make up  for all the unforeseen circumstances that led to the current situation.
