This is really old stomping ground for me from many many years ago but I did do M&A assessments back then and trying to guess where it was heading. This was pre-NBN.
I cant see MTU being that interested based on existing business as they are more commercial. SGT will be limited by consent of Singapore Telecom in Singapore and I don't think they would approve this expenditure given they restricted further investment in Australia until Optus could make a profit.
Back then TPG and IIN as a first stage merger was perfect for a number of reasons, then Vodaphone was a possibility but Vodaphone had a brand mage and reputation issue.
I have deep filed all my notes since then but from memory TPG has a little known unique offshore capacity which it owns and allows a unique swingboard into SE Asian markets also IIN has a quiet sleeper in its Internode platform.
