By memory the development drive, which ran along the dyke/country rock contact, was poorly done as it started on the hanging wall and ended on the footwall some 30?mts along strike. The reef is narrow and flat lying resulting in much dilution in order to achieve an acceptable mining height. The broken ore would not rill so had to be scraped and washed down to the draw point with gold probably still lying in the stope and along the drive.
Fully agree that hand sorting resulted in the consistently high head grades achieved by the old guys. You only need to note the amount of broken rock that is neatly stacked in voids underground to appreciate that they did all possible to send only stuff of value to the surface.
