Looking briefly at costs. The cost of Sulfur (from China) is US$250 to 350 per tonne. The cost of Sulphuric Acid is US$200 to $350 tonne; in each case freight is excluded. The atomic weight of sulphur is 32, the atomic weight of sulphuric acid is 100. Oxygen and water are $ free. So 32 tonnes of sulphur will make 100 tonnes of sulphuric acid. So for every 100 tonnes of sulphuric acid produced on site from sulphur there will be a saving of US$12000 to $23000 plus savings in freight and the value of the energy produced from burning sulphur, less the proportionate amortization and maintenance costs of the plant. The Hall's creek mobile belt contains bands of sulphide bearing shales and YAK has pointed out such material is already stockpiled at the nearby Argyle mine, so there may be cost savings to be had by getting sulphur (as iron sulphide) from such materials, rather than importing sulphur. Looks like KRR have an interesting set of calculations to do. But a straight forward numbers game.
