The latest tragic developments in Algeria remind us how important North Africa and the Middle East is to the global seabourne rock phosphate market. Algeria produces around 2 million tonnes per annum of the world’s 60-65 Mtpa rock phosphate concentrate market, but is also next door to Morocco, the world’s most important player.
We continue to believe the rock phosphate concentrate to be one of the most prospective mining markets. The market is growing in line with other agricultural markets owing to population and per capita use increases, there is over dependence on volatile North African and Middle Eastern producers, particularly for the North American producers of phosphate fertilisers and there is a desperate shortage of projects of any quality out there.
