Thanks HC, that explains things. The pressure coring was done on only two 3m cores, not the whole section.
Furthermore it was done on the Toolachee coals which were the initial target. There is no gas in the Toolachee coals in that area (they are undermature) so that was a bit of a wasted effort unfortunately. The Patchawarra coals must have been conventionally cored so they will have a lost gas component.
Just shows how much this play has transformed. The initial target in the Toolachee failed and they misinterpreted the secondary target in the Patchawarra as dry, but with some hard work and some good luck, it's still got legs.
It all just goes to show how much uncertainty surrounds these plays at the early exploration stage.
