It is very hard to forecast and predict how new technology can disrupt existing industries. Fracking technology which was originally much higher cost, has been decreasing their costs substantially and are now a force to be reckoned with. Which is underlined by the fact that there was a Fracking representative in the latest OPEC meeting.
Times have changed, and management can only be blamed to a certain extent. Not many people would have foreseen how the fracking boom will affect the oil industry.
