Each to their own as far as investments strategy.
My own philosophy and experience is simple, there are two main variables in stocks (and life in general). That of external and internal factors and locus of control (as it is referred to in psychology).
Example, stock markets have known to crash (external factor), individual stock companies can fluctuate both bankruptcy and commercialisation are possible and variances in between the bandwidth.
Individual life variances can change (internal factors), job security ect ect.
I, personally, invest capital that (at the time) is seen as spare knowing the above, set a time frame, check list progress, and set and forget unless life changes get in the way.
