More than 30 existing haul trucks will be retrofitted with driverless autonomous haulage system technology to run across both operations.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive Chris Salisbury said: “The development at West Angelas will help sustain production of the Pilbara Blend, the industry’s benchmark premium iron ore product, while the additional Robe Valley deposits will enable us to continue to provide a highly valued product to our long-term customers across Asia.”

“The approval of these two projects highlights the strong pipeline of development options within our portfolio as we remain focused on our value-over-volume strategy.”

Rio’s funding commitment for both projects forms part of its existing replacement capital guidance of about $US2.7 billion from 2018 to 2020.

Rio owns a 53 per cent holding in the Robe River Joint Venture, Mitsui 33 per cent and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation 14 per cent.

Rio shares were down 34¢, or 0.4 per cent, to $78.42 at 9.10am.

Fellow Pilbara miner BHP has already started work on its $5 billion South Flank project in the Pilbara, which will create 2500 jobs during construction and 600 once operational. The mine will replace Yandi’s 56 per cent ore, boosting the average grade of BHP ore from the Pilbara by one percentage point to 62 per cent.

FMG earlier this year gave its $1.7 billion Eliwana mine the green light.”
