The pumped hydro IS the battery. They can store energy by pumping up uphill when there is low energy use and then generate electricity when there is a demand. the water just goes up and down hill, with a low cost to pump up and high income on the downhill run. Typically, the water is pumped up during the night and used to generate power at the morning and evening peaks.
