The only thing I'd add Matt, is that being an active and interested investor may help you find people you would be willing to invest with as active managers.
I have some money in indexes, some money with active managers and some invested by my own accord (most). What I certainly don't do is pay a financial adviser to allocate the capital for me at a cost of 1-2% as a middle man.
