The Australian Shareholders' Association had urged investors to reject the report over what it says is the absence of independent directors on the company's board; money burnt on investments in a dairy farm and a mining camp, and loans made to a franchise.

But executive chairman Gerry Harvey fired back at "agitators" who he said ignored the fact Harvey Norman was not like other publicly listed companies given it was majority (55 per cent) owned by the Harvey family and other company insiders (who were not able to vote on the remuneration report).


Mr Harvey said that most ASX independent directors "don’t know what’s going on in the company at all", as illustrated by the banking royal commission, and that he would try to convince investors that having more insiders was a good thing.
