It is a common error.
Let us say that a share is worth exactly $1.
Would you prefer it to trade on market at $2 rather than 50 cents?
It is the same return. The only difference is that in one case you buy, and the other you sell.
When you have that well understood, you can understand my 'crap' comment above.
Or as Buffett says.... buy when others are fearful etc etc
