He doesn't pay himself, shareholders are free to disagree and vote against these things, we are his boss. He didn't buy $5k in shares, he bought more but they are now worth less. Some people just don't invest in shares, maybe he is one of them, or maybe he has a long term view and thinks 500k shares will be enough one day to make him rich? Each has there own investment strategy, I disagree with some peoples strategy here as much as some here disagree with his.

Best just give him a call, maybe you can convince him, he buys and the share price goes up... oh wait.
